Issue 2 - Digital Magazine Spread
Welcome to the 2nd official issue of WHIMSY Magazine. I really feel like I’m adjusting to the groove of my current content schedule and with practice I’m also getting better at creating the mini spreads. Let’s jump right into this issue!
The main theme of this particular issue is DIY. Everything from scratch, doing it all yourself, and finding whimsy in the creation. Here we go!
Recently I went to my city’s local coffee shop in downtown and got my usual warm drink. As I was there, a seasonal drink caught my eye, so I got that one also. It was none other than the strawberry rose soda, and man, it was good and obviously made in house. It was the perfect summer drink.
Naturally, I wanted to be able to replicate this at home, so I searched for recipes. It’s actually easier to make from scratch than I thought, as long as you have the right syrups for it. If you really want to get down and dirty on the whimsical DIY, then you can make the syrups from scratch too!
I did an article a few months back covering the art of the French baguette, and it’s safe to say that I’m still completely obsessed. Every week I’ll buy all the ingredients from the store and eat it nonstop for the entire few days until it runs out.
My favorite part about the sandwich is that it’s incredibly simple, light, and doesn’t mess up my sensitive stomach. It’s something I make just for pleasure whenever I’m able. I’m pretty set on the standard cheese block, prosciutto, butter, and cornichons combo, but I look forward to trying all the other variations as soon as I’m able.
I won’t dive too deep into the golden makeup look article. If you’re interested in reading about this one, I have a separate article linked here.
First of all, though, wow. What a money saver is making your own under-eye patches? Personally, sometimes I find it a little much to do a nightly facemask as my skin doesn’t need it, but my eyes sure could use more regular eyemasks. The problem? They’re soooo expensive. A set of 1 is about $3-4. A set of 6 is about $30. Big yikes for me.
I was stunned when I saw a video of someone making their own with literal natural ingredients. Actual cucumber, actual aloe, actual coffee. At one point I used some coffee grounds and honey to do my own eye mask, but using gelatin is super cool and actually provides that elastic yin-yang shape we all love! I don’t know about everyone else, but I was influenced!
I try my best to stay organized, and all the apps weren’t doing it for me. Notion works for keeping my characters and settings organized for the fantasy book I’m writing, or storing recipes for later, but doesn’t help with much else. My notes app became too cluttered, so I went back to basics. The NOTEBOOK. I have soooo many in my collection and I actually started using them.
I’m not much of a journal-er, but I sure do get crazy and random thoughts throughout the day that I like to keep track of. I also film a lot of yapping content and need a notebook to reference for bullet points. I have several different notebooks in use right now, each with a different purpose.
Also, I’m not sure if I’m behind on modern decor, but how chic is chrome decor? Little pops of reflective silver throughout your home really make all the difference (trays, vases, mirrors). I love it.
As I currently live in a cave (apartment with windows that get 0 sunlight), I’m becoming increasingly jealous of anyone who actually gets rays of sun in their home, particularly in the kitchen. Honestly my goal in life is a sunlit kitchen. That’s it. That’s all I want.
Another moment for WE HAVE EURO SUMMER AT HOME because we can literally style our homes like a European cottage if we want to. I’ve been watching a lot of Youtube video tours of said houses, and the method is actually really simple.
The insides focus a lot on each piece being a presentation. Instead of hiding our pots and pans, we are buying chic brass and hanging them on the wall to display. We are utilizing rustic wood furniture, we are adding pastel pops throughout, we are painting backsplash and adding uniquely designed wallpaper.
On a completely different note, I’ve been suffering from extreme social anxiety the last year or so, which isn’t something I talk about often (or ever). I used to be really extroverted, but life got in the way. Nevertheless, to combat this I started '“EXPOSURE THERAPY”.
Nothing serious, but I started walking around my hometown and refusing to be nervous of who sees me out and about. I unfortunately know a lot of faces here in town since I grew up here, and I think the exposure and the not caring is helping me want to actually get out more! Definitely recommend.
That’s a wrap. Here is the final graphic I created for this magazine. If you are enjoying these spreads, I’d love to hear about it. I’d also like to start featuring people and stories and brands within, so if you know of anyone, please send me a DM! Until next week!
